"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we submit the vindication of the cause for which we fought; to your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles he loved and which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Remember it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations."

Moultrie Camp normally meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at The Point Grill, 176 Patriots Point Rd., Mt. Pleasant, SC, at 6:45pm. Our next meeting will be May 15.

Confederate Memorial Day in Charleston
Thanks to all Moultrie Camp members who attended at least one of the local Confederate Memorial Day services earlier this month. Special thanks go to the men who served as ushers at the French Huguenot Church downtown; the members of the Waccamaw Light Artillery, the 10th SCVI, and the 27th SCVI for firing salutes at the service in Mt. Pleasant; Chaplain Clay Martin and Memorial Chairman Jeff Antley for putting together another great service with the Mt. Pleasant Confederate Memorial Association at Carr Street.
Past Commander Gene Hogan responds to "Good Morning Lowcountry" - Friday, December 20, 2006

Quoted from the December 20, 2006 edition of the Charleston Post & Courier:

After 11 years as part of the SCV, I can attest that this organization not only fulfills its charge but gets involved in the life of its communities. Area SCV camps have participated in events that fund research into cancer and autism; they participate in adopt-a-highway programs; and in recent weeks, the Summerville camp was responsible for significant collections for the Toys for Tots program.

As for the Mount Pleasant camp, it has for the past two years been awarded second place in the town's Christmas parade. It would seem that other people respect the work of the SCV, as well.

SC Division Commander Randy Burbage and SC Division Lt. Commander (and Moultrie Camp Past Commander) Gene Hogan were quoted in the November 23 edition of the Washington Post. The article refers to the NCAA ban on post season sporting events in SC due to the Confederate battle flag flying on the State House grounds.

Membership in the Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces. Membership can be obtained through either direct or collateral family lines and kinship to a veteran must be documented genealogically. The minimum age for membership is 12.

Proof of kinship to a Confederate soldier can take many forms. The easiest method is to contact the archives of the state from which the soldier fought and obtain a copy of the veteran's military service record. All Southern states' archives have microfilm records of the soldiers who fought from that state, and a copy of the information can be obtained for a nominal fee. In addition, the former Confederate states awarded pensions to their veterans and their widows. All of these records contain a wealth of information that can be used to document military service.

The SCV has a network of genealogists to assist you in tracing your ancestor's Confederate service.

Charge to the Sons of Confederate Veterans Minimize

To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we will commit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles which he loved and which you love also, and those ideals which made him glorious and which you also cherish.

Lt. General Stephen Dill Lee, Commander General,  United Confederate Veterans, New Orleans, Louisiana, April 25, 1906.
